A family session on hockey rink like this is what I dream about a Wisconsin photographer. The cold weather is our life for so many months of the year, and I love capturing families out in the elements, enjoying their time together. When this sweet family approached me about potentially doing a session out on their rink, it was an immediate yes from me!
Time spent laughing, falling, getting back up, and doing it all over again. These are the days that quietly shape childhood. And they deserve to be remembered.
The outdoor rink was surrounded by tall trees and soft winter light, which made it feel like it was a scene in a movie. Snow banks framed the ice, and the sun dipped low, wrapping everything in a warm golden glow. It was equally peaceful and playful, somehow. The kind of place where memories naturally unfold. And that sure was what was happening this day!
Cozy layers and knit hats, little pops of color throughout. Their everyday, well-worn skates went on. And gloves that had clearly seen a few games already were slipped onto each tiny hand.
The whole afternoon flowed so naturally. The kids chased pucks across the ice. Parents jumped in, skated alongside them, and even scooped up the youngest when little legs got tired. There were breaks on the bench. Moments to retie skates. Quiet snuggles in between bursts of energy. Those in-between moments told just as much of the story as the action.
This day about perfect smiles or everyone looking at the camera. It was about documenting their family bonds. These are the memories their kiddos will hold with them into adulthood. How special to have real, tangible evidence that they happened! Most of us millennials know how precious that is!
This mama later shared how meaningful it felt to see these moments preserved on her Instagram story. Not just for her, but for her kids too. She spoke about how fast they are growing. How quickly seasons change. And how grateful she was to be in the photos alongside them, not just watching from the sidelines. This is why I love photographing families.
Making space for families to be fully present and to feel seen. You walk away with images that feel honest and deeply persona to you & your home’s dynamic.
If your family has something you love doing together, whether it’s skating, hiking, baking, or simply being at home, those moments are worth documenting. Let’s connect and make it happen.
