A documentary style family session is about slowing down and letting real life lead the way. There is no pressure to perform. No expectation of perfection. Just space to be together and be yourselves. As a fellow mom, and photographer, these are the spaces I want to build for your family in front of my camera. Your kiddos don’t need to be perfect, and they don’t have to feel unnatural. Bring their favorite toys and blankets. Wear their favorite outfits. That’s what these photo shoots are all about.
This session took place in an open field during golden hour, with tall grass catching the light and plenty of room for little ones to explore. This is one of my favorite settings for family pictures.
(Side note: if you’re wondering where to do your photos, I have a guide for different locations I send to my families!)
The outfits matched the tone of the backdrop perfectly. Soft knits, cozy sweaters, denim, and warm neutrals created that timeless look that felt effortless. Nothing felt stiff or overdone or formal. Not matching outfits here! (Coordinating is the name of the game!)
The kids wore comfortable layers that let them sit, stand, and run without restriction. One little toy car made an appearance. A favorite lovie stayed close by.
This family spent their time laughing, cuddling, and simply being together. There were quiet moments on a blanket. There were bursts of energy with arms stretched high and little feet off the ground. Mom and Dad lifted their kids, walked hand in hand, and followed their lead instead of directing every step.
That is the heart of this approach. It is not about perfect smiles or everyone looking at the camera at once. It is about documenting love as it exists right now. The way your child reaches for you. The way your partner looks at you when no one is watching. The joy found in small, ordinary moments.
These moments are for grandparents to hang on their wall. They’re for you, as parents.
At the end of the day, these photo sessions create space for connection. It preserves the season you are in, just as it is. Messy, beautiful, and deeply meaningful.
