What to Wear to Your Engagement Session is one of the most common questions I get from couples when scheduling their photo shoots. And I understand why!
Your outfits help set the tone for your photos. They influence how relaxed you feel and how timeless your images will look years from now. The goal is never to overthink it, but that’s easier said than done. You want to choose pieces that feel like you, but how?? I like to keep things practical around here, so let me share a few tips and tricks that will help you feel confident in your outfit selection.

That’s the one rule of thumb that won’t steer you wrong. Think: soft whites, warm creams, light tans, muted greens, and classic denim. These tones photograph beautifully in natural light and never compete with the scenery or studio. They also allow your connection and emotion to stay front and center.
Lightweight fabrics move gently in the breeze can really translate your emotions into an image. But I equally love the classic denim jeans look for brides. Most of my couples choose two looks per session!
For partners, complimentary is the name of the game. I recommend neutral button downs, soft knits, and well fitting jeans or chinos. Those work perfectly. Nothing overly structured and no visible logos.

If you’re not sure what neutral means, look for earth tones. Every color has an earth tone version. Red becomes deep wine maroon, orange is rust, green is moss… etc. And pair those with creams, browns, grays, to balance the palette.
I also recommend reaching for textures over patterns or prints. Unless you just absolutely love a bold print, I recommend smaller patterns in general. And then add a knit sweater or cardigan, corduroy or something along those lines for some texture. It photographs really well!
Basically you’re just trying to pick elevated pieces of things that you would wear normally, that don’t clash with the backdrop.

Your engagement session is about celebrating this new season of life. When your outfits feel natural and true to you, your photos will too. But I also want you to feel informed and ready for your session.
So you’ll be ready when the time comes. And if you need a photographer, feel free to reach out here!
