There is something so special about a golden hour maternity session at the end of summer. The light just softens in the most delicious and dreamy way. And families settle into each other as the light fades… something about it just makes my photographer heart SO HAPPY. 

For this family’s sweet session, we met during the last hour of the day at one of my favorite outdoor spots for family sessions.

The weather was perfect this day. They had a calm breeze and that dreamy golden light that makes everything feel a little magical. This sweet family of four is getting ready to welcome baby number three, and you could feel the excitement from the start. Both from the small boys, and mom and dad! 

We began with full group photos, which is how I love to start my family sessions. (You can see another family session on the blog here!)

It gives everyone a chance to relax and ease into the experience. Photos can feel a little nerve wracking at first, especially for little ones. But these two brothers were all smiles. They were proud to hold up the sonogram photos. They kissed mama’s belly. Wrapped their arms around her with so much joy. 

As a mom of multiples myself, I know how meaningful this season is. Your kids are stepping into new roles. They are becoming big brothers and big sisters again.

Capturing that shift is always one of my favorite parts of a session.

Why I Love Golden Hour Maternity

The lighting during these sessions is unmatched. It adds warmth and softness to every image, not to mention how enchanting it feels in the moment too!

It feels calm and intimate, like there is no one else on earth. And that’s kinda how it feels to be in a tight knit family.

I loved being able to use the lighting to convey this emotion for them.

This mama chose two different looks, and both were perfect. A classic boho maternity dress for that timeless feel. (Here’s a similar one!) Then a modern vest and denim combo for something elevated and modern, while sticking to the outdoor vibe. The variety added so much depth to their final gallery.

If you are planning your own outdoor photo shoot during your pregnancy, here are a few ideas to bring along:

• A flowy dress and a more casual outfit for variety
• Sonogram photos to include siblings
• Neutral, coordinated outfits for the whole family
• A simple treat like ice cream sandwiches to celebrate at the end (spoiler, that’s what this family did!)
• A blanket for the grass
• Accessories like hats, belts, sentimental jewlery
• Baby props like shoes, onesie, nursery decor etc.

We finished this golden hour maternity session with the warmest light and sticky fingers from ice cream.

I loved that they brought a sweet treat for the end in a cooler, and we got to document the kiddos enjoying it. Those are the sweet memories you’ll want in 10 or 15 years!

It was the perfect way to document a growing family, and I am so excited for them as they start this next chapter!
